An Introduction to Hemp CBD

There are many different types of hemp CBD products available; but, what exactly is it?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, a naturally occurring compound that is found inside of the hemp plant. The hemp plant has a rich history with a multitude of possibilities and potential. From fiber, paper, fuel to CBD products, hemp is a wondrous, fast yield crop that has become the hit of the marketplace.

What exactly is CBD?

Inside of the cannabis genus of plants are hundreds of cannabinoids. These molecular compounds have been studied by many researchers throughout time. First discovered in the 1960’s, Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive compound that can be extracted from the plant and used as an ingredient inside many hemp-based CBD product options available including tinctures, treats and topical creams.

New consumers may feel a sense of confusion when first looking into hemp CBD products and fear any potential inclusion of THC. THC is Tetrahydrocannabinol - the component of the sibling to hemp (marijuana) that is known to facilitate the psychotropic response, or, the “high”. Hemp, however, must have .3% THC or less to be considered a hemp plant. This is considered a non-psychoactive amount. Naturally abundant in CBD, hemp is the main plant that most CBD products are based with.

How does CBD work with the body?

Scientists and medical researchers have taken a lot of time in studying this very question. It was in this research that it was discovered that CBD interacts with our body by matching up to the Endocannabinoid System. The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is believed to play a role in regulating a broad range of physiological processes that affect our everyday life. Within the Endocannabinoid System are endogenous cannabinoids, receptors and enzymes. The two main receptors that have been discovered are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found predominantly in the central nervous system and the CB2 receptors have been discovered to be in the peripheral nervous system and immune cells.

It is believed that the phytocannabinoids in the hemp plant, like CBD, are able to work with the body’s own endocannabinoid system to facilitate potentially positive effects for those who may enjoy it.

How can CBD be enjoyed?

After the plant has been grown and harvested, it goes through an extraction process which safely separates the cannabinoids from the fibrous portions. Once extracted, the cannabinoids can be separated and used in many products for consumers like topical creams or oil tinctures.

No matter which method you may choose, it is always a good idea to speak with your medical provider about potential issues that they may want to speak about.

By doing your due diligence, and utilizing quality, consistent and compliant products, the consumer can play an active role in what desired results that you’re hoping to achieve.
